Exports are mainly directed to countries such as Algeria, Colombia or Romania; while imports come from countries such as Finland, the United States, Norway or Sweden.

The production of companies in the port of Gandia reaches 15.81 million euros.

The PAV has invested 1.9 million euros in 2017 in the port of Gandia and plans to invest another 11 million euros more until 2021.

Gandia, November the 13th 2017. – The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) today presented the results of the study “Economic Impact of the Port of Gandia in 2015”, prepared by the Department of Economics and Social Sciences through the Research Group of International Economics and Development of the Universitat Politècnica de València. The act, celebrated in the Building of Promotion, Agriculture, Industry and Commerce, has counted on the presence of Maria Luisa Martí, author of the study; Aurelio Martínez, president of the Port of Valencia; and Diana Morant, mayor of Gandia.

During the ceremony, the president of the Port Authority of Valencia stressed that “this study shows that the port of Gandia has the potential to generate wealth in its environment. From the PAV we are working to have a well communicated port, intermodal, accomplice with the city and respectful with the environment “.

For its part, the mayor of Gandia has said that “the port of Gandia is one of our main assets and a symbol of our industry.” He also recalled that “this study of economic impact shows that commercial growth is not incompatible with tourist and leisure uses of the port.”

Economic impact in the Port of Gandia 

The study of “Economic Impact of the port of Gandia in 2015” aims to quantify the economic impact associated with the commercial activity of the port of Gandia in terms of production, income and employment in the city’s economy, using the input-output methodology. The study concludes that the production of the port area and the companies of the port community reaches 15.81 million euros. This figure comes from the 7.28 million euros generated by the initial activity of the port of Gandia and by the economic impact that its activity propitiates in the companies of the port community, an activity that implies a sum of value of 8.53 million of euros, between direct, indirect and induced. By economic sectors, it is worth noting the impact on sectors such as construction, which represents 18.5% of the total; real estate and business services, which reaches 16.5%; transport and communication, with 14.9%; and trade and repair, with 11.5%. All of them are sectors where the port industry has a great influence, due to its strong dependence to ensure proper operation.

The report also concludes that the companies of the port of Gandia provide a gross added value of 9.74 million euros.

Impact on the employement 

With regard to the impact on employment, companies related to the port of Gandia have created 159 jobs. Specifically, 71 people currently work in the port of Gandia, among operators and service providers. The enclave also generates another 88 jobs, among direct, indirect and induced. Likewise, the gross salary income generated by the activity of the site amounts to 5.51 million euros.

Traffic and investments in the port of Gandia 

The port of Gandia attends general cargo traffic, with a high degree of specialization in the handling of goods such as coils and pulp, wood packages, iron and steel products, iron sheets and rods, perishable products and refrigerated fruit. In particular, paper and cardboard represent 42% of the traffic of the port of Gandia, chemical products 28%; and wood and coal 20%. The Gandiense enclave is, mainly, directed to the foreign trade when maintaining commercial relations with around 20 countries of the world. Among them, exports of wood and cork to Tunez stand out; and chemical products also stand out to Colombia and Romania. With regard to imports, Gandia is a port for unloading paper and pulp, mainly from Finland, the United States and Sweden; other metallurgical products come from Norway; while the wood and cork come from countries such as Poland, Finland or Switzerland.

During the meeting, it was also explained that the port of Gandia will receive in 2017 an investment of 1.9 million euros that will be used to refurbish the northern dike (727,000 €), reorganize the southern area and extension of La Lonja (391,000€), and dredging the entrance channel of the port (200,000 euros). The Business Plan of the PAV contemplates investments of 11 million euros more up to the year 2021, which will be used for new accesses by road and for works contemplated in the Gandia Master Plan, such as those foreseen in the enclosure and berth of the Serpis dock.

Likewise, the active port-city integration policy has been highlighted, which is materialized through the collaboration agreement between the PAV and the City Council of Gandia, which contemplates the development of citizen projection uses in the northern area. This agreement has made possible, among other measures, that in 2017 the new pedestrian promenade located on the north dock of the port has been made available to the public.
