Sagunto, November the 13th 2017. – The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) has today presented the results of the study “Economic impact of the port of Sagunto in 2015”, prepared by the Department of Economics and Social Sciences through the Research Group of International Economics and Development of the Universitat Politècnica de València. The event, held at the Civic Center of the port of Sagunto, was attended by María Luisa Martí, author of the study; Francesc Fernández, mayor of Sagunto, Aurelio Martínez, president of the PAV; and José Llorca, president of Puertos del Estado.

During the presentation of the report, Aurelio Martínez pointed out that “from the Port Authority of Valencia we do not want the port of Sagunto to be just a logistics area but to generate around an industrial environment. Hence our commitment to be in Parc Sagunt. We would like to have the capacity to create industrial areas that generate traffic in our ports. In this sense, the direct connection of the port of Sagunto with the one of Valencia is also fundamental for us because this area represents the largest industrial plot that currently exists in the Mediterranean and we believe that we must take advantage of its potential “. The president of the PAV has also stressed that “the Port of Sagunto PIF is an absolutely essential claim and we would like it to enter into service in phases.”

For its part, the president of Puertos del Estado, José Llorca, said that “from Puertos del Estado we defend that all ports have the same conditions to compete and, therefore, it is fundamental that Sagunto has a PIF. We are willing to collaborate, even economically, so that border control does not adversely affect the competitiveness of our ports. “. He also recalled that the Economic Impact Study of the port of Sagunto highlights the important evolution of traffic that has lived in this port area. “This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the current port system inaugurated in 1992. In that year, the Spanish port system channeled 253 million tonnes. Since then, that figure has more than doubled. In the case of containers, we have gone from 3 million TEUs to more than 15 million TEUs this year, which means, multiply by five that amount. ”

Regarding the northern access to the port of Valencia, Llorca recalled that “this infrastructure and its connection with Sagunto is essential, so it is necessary to strengthen the relationship with local and neighborhood authorities to address the improvements that these connections will bring since it is about investments that will always be attentive to environmental care. When they are undertaken, we will always be vigilant so that they develop in a sustainable way “.

Finally, Francesc Fernández, mayor of Sagunto, has recognized the importance of the data presented with special emphasis on employment and, above all, on the quality of it. As for the integration of the port of Sagunto with the city, the mayor has indicated that “the correct integration of the port area with the city is decisive for the city of Sagunto project in which we are working. Enhancing the port as an urban space is the great challenge of our municipality. ”
