Valenciaport has received the award from MedCruise for its management of the COVID-19 pandemic on the social networks and its support for the cruise sector

Cruise activity returns to Valencia. On the 27th of June, the Mein Schiff 2 ship of the TUI Cruises company will stop over

València, June 11th, 2021.- Valenciaport has received this morning the award for the best strategy in social networks granted by the Association of Mediterranean Cruise Ports (MedCruise), an award that recognises the work carried out in 2020 by the port community of Valencia during the COVID-19 pandemic and the support to the cruise sector in a complicated year for this industry. The president of the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV), Aurelio Martínez, thanked on behalf of the Port of Valencia and its port community “for this prize awarded by MedCruise, which highlights the value of transmitting and explaining to people the importance of ports and cruises for communication between countries and cultures. A recognition which motivates us to continue along this path”.

The PAV also underlined the great work carried out by the two finalist institutions, Galataport Instanbul of Turkey and Port Network Authority of Southern Adriatic of Italy, as well as the commitment of MedCruise for its decisive role in the promotion and support of the cruise community. This is the third edition of these awards organised by this Association which brings together and represents cruise ports hosting more than 20% of world traffic.

MedCruise has highlighted the “excellent” work carried out during 2020 by the port community of Valencia through the different social networks (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or Youtube) as a public service to inform the public, companies and institutions of its activity in a year marked by the health emergency, with a commitment to close, visual and humanised content.

Return of activity

The cruise sector now has the green light to return to its activity in the Spanish ports. After more than a year at a standstill, the Port of Valencia will receive the Mein Schiff 2 of the company TUI Cruises, a cruise ship with a peninsular itinerary which will call at the port on 27 June under very exhaustive safety protocols. The opening of the cruise sector was long awaited news for the whole sector that participates in this activity: companies involved, commerce, hotels, tourist guides, transport, cultural services and food, among others.  The fact is that the 15 months of inactivity of cruise tourism in Valencia has meant that the city and its surroundings have lost some 70 million euros (initial disbursement plus turnover in the economic sectors of the city), according to a study carried out by the Valenciaport Foundation in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

During this time, PAV, cruise community, Regional Ministry of Health, Turisme Comunitat Valenciana and València Turisme have worked to guarantee the safety of cruise passengers, port workers and the destination of Valencia at all times. A safe tourism which, in addition to the demanding measures adopted by the shipping companies, will have a diversified tourist offer within the city and its surroundings with “bubble” groups. These protocols establish exclusively guided excursions, with no possibility for passengers to go down to the destination on their own, small groups and more outdoor experiences, among others.
