The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) participated in the technical conference on Artificial Intelligence and Archives organised by the Association of Spanish Archivists in the Public Service (AEFP).

Valenciaport presented its commitment to Artificial Intelligence in the processing of data to facilitate searches

Digital Transformation is one of the PAV’s strategic objectives to promote new digital business models and facilitate society’s access to information.

The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV01) has presented its Historical Archive at the conference on ‘Artificial Intelligence and Archives’ organised by the Association of Spanish Archivists in the Public Service (AEFP) at the Faculty of Documentation Sciences of the Complutense University of Madrid.

During the presentation, which was entitled “Artificial Intelligence at the service of transparency in Public Administration”, Xavier Mulet, head of Electronic Administration and Document Management, and Juan José Sevilla, head of Document Management at the PAV, explained the process of creation and operation of the Historical Archive. The heads of Valenciaport explained the use of Artificial Intelligence in the processing of file data and documents to facilitate intelligent, simple and complex searches of these.

The application of this technology begins with cognitive OCR (Optical Character Recognition) processing of document images (JPG), followed by cognitive recognition of entities (people, places and organisations) with automatic self-learning (machine learning). Subsequently, advanced natural language processing is performed for sentiment analysis to be incorporated into the neural network, extraction of key phrases and language detection. Finally, the Index is fed which allows a wide range of intelligent queries: simple searches, simple wildcard searches, simple approximate searches, compound searches, compound proximity searches, searches with prioritisation of terms, Metadata query, advanced Metadata search and searches through the Classification Table.

All searches can be performed using the previously selected language (Spanish, Valencian and English), displaying the information retrieved from the metadata of the documents in that language.

On the other hand, it should be noted that PAV representatives held a meeting with María Olivera, Vice-Dean of Students and Library of the Faculty of Documentation Sciences. After the meeting, they agreed to explore different ways of collaboration for the dissemination at the Complutense University of the photographic collections that the PAV rescued from the facilities of the former Unión Naval de Levante.

All these initiatives are part of one of the objectives of the Valenciaport Strategic Plan, which is the firm commitment to Digital Transformation to promote new digital business and connectivity models and to position the port as a ValenciaSmartPort committed to society.
