The head of environmental policies of the PAV, Raúl Cascajo, explained the pillars of Valenciaport in order to be an emission neutral port by 2030.

The Port of Valencia has been promoting ecological alternatives for years, including the H2PORTS initiative to implement the use of green hydrogen and the electrification of the docks.

The conference was attended by Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena, President of Puertos del Estado; Gerardo Landaluce, President of the Port Authority of Algeciras.

The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) has been present at the international seminar “Green Transition for Maritime Transport” organised by the MedPorts Association together with the Port Authority of Algeciras Bay. The head of environmental policies of Valenciaport, Raúl Cascajo, took part in the round table in which the most striking sustainable initiatives of the port sector at a global level were discussed, where he explained the pillars of the APV in decarbonisation: renewable energies, use of alternative/clean fuels, energy efficiency and digitalisation.

The Port of Valencia is particularly committed to the 2030 Agenda and has long been a leader in promoting sustainable projects to reduce the environmental footprint. During his speech, Cascajo explained the initiatives that the APV is carrying out to achieve its goal of zero emissions by 2030, such as the H2PORTS initiative to establish the use of green hydrogen in its operations, the installation of an electrical substation to connect the ships’ engines to shore power while they are docked at the Port of Valencia or the installation of wind turbines to generate wind energy.

He also pointed out that from 2008 to 2019 the carbon footprint of the Port of Valencia has been reduced by 37%, from 3.19 to around 2 kg of CO2 per tonne handled. In the same period of time, the activity of Valenciaport grew by 42%, going from 52 million tonnes handled in 2008 to 74 million tonnes handled at the close of the 2019 financial year.

The conference was attended by Álvaro Rodríguez Dapena, president of Puertos del Estado; Gerardo Landaluce, president of the Port Authority of Algeciras; Víctor Jiménez, president of the Council of the International Maritime Organization; Valter Selen, Senior Advisor for Sustainable Development Policies and Coordinator of Ecoports; Óceane Rignault of the French Ministry of the Sea; and Antonis Michail, Project Coordinator of the WPSP, IAPH.
