This is the year-to-year historical record of the Port Authority of Valencia

In the last twelve months, the ports of Valencia and Gandia have accumulated 1,038,255 passengers.

So far this year, at the end of the third quarter, passenger traffic grew by 19.33%.

Container traffic increased 1.62% in the accumulated between January and September.

Foreign trade (imports and exports) of full containers increased by 6.25%.

Total traffic exceeds 55 million tonnes with a 3.30% increase in the first 9 months of the year.

Valencia, October the 18th 2017. – Valenciaport’s passenger traffic has reached its best historical record in year-to-year terms last September. Specifically, in the last twelve months, 1,038,255 passengers have used the ports of Valencia and Gandia on their maritime journeys, a figure that represents an increase of 23.45%. If we break down this data, 630,673 people have used regular line services, a figure that represents an increase of 36.67%; and 407,582 passengers landed on the Grao grounds on board a tourist cruise, a 7.38% more.

This historic record is mainly due to the increase in regular line passengers due to the good reception of the last two lines that have start up: the one between Valencia and the Algerian port of Mostaganem, and the entry into operation of the line between Gandia and Ibiza. In particular, Operation Cross-Straits of this exercise, which concluded on September 15, accumulated 63,437 passengers. For its part, the ferry between Gandia and Ibiza has reached 32,618 passengers at the end of September.

As regards this year data, at the end of the third quarter, 790,468 people have used the ports of Valencia and Gandia as origin / destination of their journeys. According to the statistical bulletin data of the Port Authority of Valencia, until September 510,037 passengers used regular line services, up 32.03%. For its part, 280,431 people arrived in Valencia aboard one of the 132 cruise stopovers received during the first nine months of the year, 1.56% more than during the same period of the previous year.

Goods also advance

Valenciaport closed the third quarter of the year with a total traffic of 55,155,674 tonnes, a 3.30% more than the same period of the previous year. The import-export of general cargo has grown by 7.13%, to a total of 17,263,031 tonnes. Specifically, exports have advanced a 7.16% to 11 million tonnes due to good registrations in countries such as Italy (+ 3.75%), the United States (+14.15%) and Morocco (+6.49% %). In terms of imports, they increased by 7.09%, with 6.26 million tonnes driven by the behavior of countries such as China (+ 15.48%); France (+ 22.25%), the United States (+ 10.10%) and Turkey (+ 30.84%). At the end of the third quarter of the year, global traffic ascends to 6.18%.

In terms of container traffic, Valenciaport handled until September 3,615,025 TEU, which represents an increase of 1.62%, maintaining the positive tonic which started last July. This growth is due to the foreign trade of full containers, which increased by 6.25% in this period. The breakdown of this item shows that exports advanced a 6.50% while imports increased by 5.92%. Container transit also maintains the positive path with an increase of 5.20%. On the other hand, the negative sign remains in the empty containers, which, until September, registered a decrease of 18.8%.

Containerized general cargo rises 4.95% to a total traffic of 42,199,935 tonnes. By cargo, this rise is mainly due to good records of construction materials, with 1.42 million tonnes and an increase of 3.01%; the rest of the cargo, with 1.65 million tonnes and an advance of 3.34%; and chemicals, with 1.42 million tonnes and an increase of 3.01%.

In addition, Conventional general cargo grew by 4.78% to a total traffic of 8,576,109 tonnes. This rise is due to the behavior of goods such as steel products, which, with 1.68 million tonnes, rose 24.33% in that period. By contrast, automobiles pieces fell by 2.55% to a total of 1.13 million tonnes. Taking these data by units, the ports of Valencia and Sagunto have handled 570,635 automobiles, 0.58% less than in the same period of the previous year. The ro-ro traffic, on the other hand, amounts to 0.08% with a total traffic of 6.86 million tonnes.

Liquid bulk returned a 5.61% at the end of the third quarter of the year, to a total traffic of 2,491,476 tonnes. In this section stand out goods such as natural gas, with 1.23 million tonnes and a decrease of 20.77%; diesel, with 291,000 tonnes and a decrease of 4.53%; and chemical products, with 255,000 tonnes and an advance of 3.24%.

Solid bulk decreased by 16.55% to a total of 1,630,669 tonnes. This item includes goods such as cereals and flour, with a movement of 738,000 tonnes and an advance of 7.99%; the natural and artificial fertilizers, with a movement of 400,000 tonnes and an increase of 22.43%; and cement and clinker, with a movement of 188,000 tonnes and a decrease of 52.89%.

Traffic by countries and geographical areas

The five countries shipping the largest volume of goods handled through Valenciaport at the end of the third quarter of the year were: Spain, with 6.53 million tonnes and a growth of 0.18%; China, with 5.39 million tonnes and an advance of 5.94%; United States, with 3.78 million tonnes and an increase of 17.41%; Italy, with 3.45 million tonnes and a decrease of 4.67%; and Algeria, with 3.07 million tonnes and a 30.60% decline. By geographical areas the area of the Mediterranean and Black Sea stands out, with 13.69 million tonnes and a decrease of 7.33%; and the Far East, with 8.04 million tonnes and a rise of 9.80%.
