10 professions linked to the port community with a female population are collected, and the training path to access them is explained

Through ‘El Port de València creixent en igualtat’, Valenciaport encourages women to form part of the professional team in activities linked to the port community

València, March 8th, 2023.- Mooring, tugging, stevedoring, transport, emergency workers,… are professions linked to port activity that are becoming increasingly more female. The port community has focused on these professionals and on the possibilities offered by their activity to attract new female workers to a sector such as the port-logistics sector with great possibilities and present and future potential.

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Valenciaport has inaugurated in the Clock Building the exhibition ‘El Port de València creixent en igualtat’, an action that has been coordinated by the Equality Commission of the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) in collaboration with the port community. The opening ceremony of the exhibition was attended by representatives of Valenciaport, trade unions and the port community.

Elena Oliver, head of Human Resources at Valenciaport, pointed out at the opening of the exhibition that “in the last five years, the number of women working at the APV has gone from 14% to 21%, an important advance, but still with a lot of room for improvement”. On the other hand, parity does exist in the PAV’s management body, which has 13 senior positions, of which 6 are women (46%) and 7 are men (54%). This is another step forward in the evolution towards equality between the two genders. In fact, three years ago this figure was 11 men compared to 6 women.

Carmen Jordán, economic-financial technician of the PAV, explained that “this exhibition, which represents a forest, shows the growth of the trees, as a metaphor for the growth of women in the port area, in their rights and in their capacities and responsibilities”. Along the same lines, Isabel Ruiz, an occupational risk prevention technician, highlighted the fact that the exhibition “reflects the training and skills required to access this type of job”.

For his part, the president of the PAV, Aurelio Martínez, indicated that ‘El Port de València creixent en igualtat’ has the objective of “recognising the work of women in our activity, taking stock of the progress made in recent years, establishing achievable goals and encouraging all women to take on positions of responsibility”.

A forest symbolising growth in equality

The exhibition, which will remain open until Sunday 12 March between 11.00 a.m. and 6.30 p.m., recreates a forest that symbolises the growth in equality of the Port of Valencia. The forest is built on a substratum of values of equality, teamwork, solidarity, effort, etc. Above them are trees of the human team that makes up the activity of the port community and the work carried out by the female population. At the top, there is a view of the top of the trees with the symbolism of growth.

The exhibition is made up of 10 cylinders containing the contents of the exhibition. Specifically, 10 port professions are represented with examples of women with the aim of raising awareness among this population of the activities carried out in the port area and the logistical field in which they can carry out their professional life and form part of this human team.

These trees explain the profiles of each profession, the training required to access it and QR codes explaining the places where training courses are held and employment data for each sector. It also provides information on companies and institutions that offer this type of employment. Specifically, the professional profiles included in the exhibition ‘El Port de València creixent en igualtat’ are stevedore, mooring, tugboat, emergency operator, port police, IT, transporter, electrical operator, technician and head of operations and port services of rail traffic.

These are professions in which the female population is increasingly present. In the case of the PAV’s Emergency Centre, 50% of the emergency operators are men and 50% are women. The València Port Employment Centre has 242 women, representing 16.38% of the dockers’ staff. The València CPE is the first port centre in Spain with women in all professional categories or groups.

Moorers, IT specialists, transporters, electrical technicians, port police officers, tugs …. are other port professions shown in the exhibition, which have a female population, but still far from the male population. They are an opportunity and with this exhibition we want to encourage all women to join the team of the port community.
