València, May 12th, 2023.- The president of the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV), Joan Calabuig, will participate on 17 May in Rotterdam in the 5th CEO summit of the World Ports Climate Action Program (WPCAP). This initiative is made up of 12 of the most important ports in the world that are committed to decarbonisation and emission reduction projects.

Specifically, in this edition, three round tables will be held on ‘National and Regional Leadership’, ‘Onshore Power’ and ‘Green Corridors’. Joan Calabuig will participate in the first of these panels together with the CEO of the Port of Rotterdam, Allard Castelein; the CEO of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Jacques Vandermeiren; the coordinator of Maritime Industry and Tourism of the German government, Dieter Janecek; and the director of WPCAP and the Port of Vancouver Port Authority.

A team of representatives from the PAV and the Valenciaport Foundation will also be attending the meeting and will form part of the working groups that will address the challenges and commitments of the Valencian port community in terms of sustainability. The representation will be made up of Nacho Benítez, R&D&I, Sustainability and Energy Efficiency technician; Raúl Cascajom, head of Environmental Policies; Rocio García Innovation & Port Cluster Development of the Valenciaport Foundation; and Manuel Rodríguez, head of the International Office.

The WPCAP is an initiative to promote and coordinate the efforts of the ports to improve the environment by encouraging cooperation between all the agents in the logistics chain. The Port of Valencia will form part of this select group together with the ports of Antwerp, Barcelona, Gothenburg, Hamburg, Le Havre, Long Beach, Los Angeles, New York/New Jersey, Rotterdam, Vancouver and Yokohama.

The PAV joined this initiative at the end of 2020, a programme that promotes synergies between the main port communities to act against climate change through concrete measures to play an active role in the fight against global warming.

Specifically, Valenciaport forms part of the WPCAP teams that are developing programmes for: the decarbonisation of terminals; favouring the objective of zero emissions from ships on docks; increasing the efficiency of logistics chains; and promoting common incentive policies for the reduction of emissions.

Five axes against climate change

The ports integrated in the WPCAP created a programme of climate measures centred on five axes:

  • Increasing the efficiency of logistics chains through the development and harmonisation of digital tools.
  • Promoting the common approach of public policies on the reduction of emissions within large geographical areas.
  • Accelerate the development of renewable energy for ships or other “zero emission” alternatives at the dockside.
  • Accelerate the development of alternative fuels for ships, whose emissions are at least 50% lower than those generated by current fuels.
  • Advocate the “de-carbonisation” of port terminals.
