València, 27 March 2024.- Valenciaport is making progress on its Sustainable Transport to Work Plan. Next April, the Port Authority of València (PAV) will approve the plan that is being developed through a participatory process. The Sustainable Mobility Commission of the “Commercial Port of València” (from the inside) has been involved in its design and content. It is made up of the terminal operators and the most representative groups of the port in terms of the size of the workforce, the trade union representatives and the PAV.

In this sense, the Sustainable Mobility Commission of the Commercial Port of València has already reached a consensus on the strategy and lines of action to promote the sustainable mobility of employees to their workplace -located in the port area-. With this, the PAV’s objective is to rationalise travel, promoting the use of sustainable means of transport and, at the same time, to guarantee accessibility and sustainable and safe mobility, both to and from the commercial Port of València, as well as for internal travel.

The strategic lines approved are: to promote the use of public transport, to encourage cycle-pedestrian mobility and electric mobility, to improve road traffic management and to optimise mobility management in the port area. The final objective is to contribute to making the Port of València an emission-free space accessible to all forms of transport: pedestrians, cyclists, public transport, personal mobility vehicles and electric vehicles.

The Plan has been framed within the framework of the future new Sustainable Mobility Law, pending approval by the Council of Ministers. One of the first steps to develop the plan will be to convene meetings with the city council and public institutions with the aim of promoting and implementing, among others, measures that address the improvement of public transport to the access to the commercial port. In the short term, with the development of this plan, Valenciaport aims to reduce private vehicle journeys and their equivalent CO2 emissions by 15%.

X-ray of journeys

In order to assess the transport and access conditions, a preliminary diagnostic study has been carried out involving office workers, dockers and transporters.

The results of this assessment indicate the need to adapt the site to facilitate and ensure access by bicycles, personal mobility vehicles (such as electric scooters) and even on foot.

Around 58% of port employees live in the city of València. An increase in the frequency of public transport to the port would be beneficial for this group, who are willing to leave their vehicles at home if more bus options are available or if safe access for bicycles or scooters is implemented. Considering the nature of the port as a fiscal precinct, the coexistence and interaction in this space of the different modes of mobility present – heavy traffic, cars, bicycles, VMPs, and walking – must be ensured with the guarantee of maximum safety and security so that we have a safe port from a road safety point of view.
