Valencia, July 24th 2017. – The Port Authority of Valencia today presented the results of the study of “Economic Impact of the Ports of the Port Authority of Valencia in 2015”, prepared by the Department of Economy and Social Sciences through the Research Group of International Economics and Development of The Universitat Politècnica de València. The event, held in the Clock Building, was attended by María Luisa Martí, in charge of the study; Aurelio Martínez, president of the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV); José Llorca, president of Puertos del Estado; and Ximo Puig, president of the Generalitat Valenciana.

Economic Impact 

The report, which does not include the economic effects of the cruise sector, aims to quantify the economic impact associated with Valenciaport’s commercial activity in 2015, in terms of production, income and employment in the Valencian economy, using the input-output methodology. The report concludes that the gross added value generated by the three ports managed by the PAV amounts to 2.352 million euros, 2.49% of the total of the Comunitat Valenciana. This figure arises from the 723.45 million euros generated by the initial activity of Valenciaport and the economic impact of its activity in port companies, an activity involving a sum of 1,629 million euros, between direct, indirect and induced. By economic sectors, we can highlight the impact in sectors such as transport and communications, which represents 19.11% of the total; construction, which reaches 14.96%; real estate and business services, with 14.91%; and trade and repair, with 13.40%. All of them are sectors on which the port industry has a great influence, due to its strong dependence to ensure a correct functioning.

Impact on the employement 

Regarding employment, Valenciaport related companies generated 36,978 jobs, representing 2.04% of the total number of jobs in Valencia and showing the importance of Valenciaport as a jobs generator. In particular, at present, 7,667 people work in Valenciaport, between operators and service providers. The three ports also generate another 29,311 jobs between direct, indirect and induced. By sector, the main effect is the transport and communications sector, which, with 13,564 jobs, represents the 11.79% of the total workers in Valencia. In addition, gross wages generated by Valenciaport activity amounts to 1,194 million euros, 2.25% of the salaries of the Comunitat Valenciana.

Fiscal impact and economic profits 

The companies related to the port activity developed by Valenciaport obtained business profits of 780 million euros, of which 544 million euros were direct impacts, 28 million euros corresponded to the indirect impact and 208 million euros were generated in an induced manner.
Regarding tax revenue, the study concludes that the ports managed by the Port Authority of Valencia generate revenues for the public coffers of the State of 50.6 million euros, of which 22.4 million euros are generated in an induced way, 25.6 million euros are of indirect effect and 2.6 million are taxes of direct effect.
