Tradition by the sea

These days in August are very special for Pinedo. For more than 160 years, the Creu de la Conca beach area has welcomed jockeys and riders with their horses to challenge each other in the traditional Corregudes de Joies, a historic spectacle. In this sense, the APV, together with the companies of the port community that support these historic races, want to show their commitment to the organisers of the event so that the hundreds of people who come to Pinedo beach can enjoy these horse races that have been held since the middle of the 19th century.

It is a 700-metre race in which the jockeys or horsewomen compete for the precious jewel tied around their necks, that is, a silk scarf of different colours on a laurel wreath that was once given to the beloved woman at the end of the race, a tradition that is still practised in Pinedo.

Les Corregudes de Joies were originally held in the market garden to the rhythm of the tabalet and the dolçaina. Pinedo is the only Valencian town that has maintained this tradition as part of its Festa Grossa. According to tradition, in the Corregudes de Joies, the rider has to ride without a saddle, as has been done since the beginning by the farmers and farm workers of the area, who were the ones who promoted these races as part of their popular festivals. The name Corregudes de Joies comes from the prize given to the winners, large silk handkerchiefs that are usually hung over the laurel wreaths during the days of the race. One of the handkerchiefs will be to adorn the neck of the winning horse and the other for the jockey who rises above the winner.
