Valencia, 25 August 2026 – The Port Authority of Valencia has launched the tender process for the construction of a new electrical substation that will supply power to the Port of Valencia, as well as to the companies and concessionaires operating within the port. The facility will have an installed capacity of 110 megawatts, provided by two 55-megawatt transformers.

This second high-voltage electrical substation, named ST PORT AUTHORITY OF VALENCIA 2, will double the port’s power supply capacity to meet the growing energy demand from cargo terminals, logistics infrastructure and the new Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems for ships. It represents a major step towards enhancing the Port of Valencia’s operational reliability and environmental sustainability.

The project has a budget of €15.6 million and is co-funded by the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).

The new substation will enable the interconnection of the Port Authority of Valencia’s (PAV) power supply network in its northern area with the high-voltage distribution grid. By operating two independent substations, each connected through separate service connections provided by the distribution utility, the port facility ensures a highly resilient power supply architecture with maximum availability.

As a result, in the event of network failures, maintenance work or exceptional demand peaks affecting incoming power line, the port’s internal electricity network will be able to switch seamlessly to the second substation, ensuring uninterrupted operations across the terminals. This high level of reliability is essential to prevent critical disruptions to cargo-handling cranes and to maintain the continuous power supply required for refrigerated cargo (reefers).

Designed with sustainability in ,ind

The new substation has been designed with sustainability and landscape integration in mind, while incorporating gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) technology. This enclosed, leak-proof system eliminates the risk of environmental contamination by preventing the release of polluting fluids into the ground or the sea. In addition, its gas-insulated design protects the equipment against the saline corrosion typically associated with marine environments.

This technology also helps reduce the visual impact of the infrastructure, as all high-voltage equipment is housed within a fully enclosed building. This allows the substation to blend seamlessly into the port environment without altering the surrounding landscape, while also minimizing noise emissions from the facility.

In addition, it optimizes the use of space by occupying up to 80% less land than an equivalent outdoor substation, freeing up valuable operational space for port logistics.

Driving the Energy Transition

Through its Net Zero Emissions Plan, Valenciaport is committed to achieving energy self-sufficiency and is working to generate all the electricity required to meet the energy demand associated with the economic and commercial activities of its ports. This second substation not only strengthens the quality and reliability of its internal power network, but also provides the capacity required to support the large-scale electrification of the port.The initiative will enable berthed vessels to switch off their auxiliary engines and connect directly to the onshore renewable electricity grid, dramatically reducing atmospheric emissions and noise pollution in the city’s urban environment.
