Brussels, 2 September 2021 – “The European Parliament’s Committee on Petitions yesterday closed a Spanish citizen’s complaint that the northern expansion project of the port of Valencia had not been subject to a new environmental impact assessment after undergoing several modifications compared to its original 2007 version.

The president of the Petitions Committee, Dolors Montserrat, closed the petition after MEPs representing a majority of the political groups in this body decided not to continue dealing with the case and the European Commission declared that it had no legal basis for a ruling”.  This is how Cadena SER reported the conclusion and closure of the case of a citizen’s complaint against the expansion of the Port of Valencia before the European Parliament.

“The resolution – summarised Europa Press – has been adopted after hearing the petitioner; the president of the Port Authority of Valencia (APV), Aurelio Martínez, who has insisted that the project complies with environmental legislation, and the councillor for Ecological Transition, Mirella Mollà, who demands a new EIS to clear up “the environmental collapse” that it would mean for the largest freshwater lake in Spain, the Albufera. For its part, the European Commission maintains its position that it “lacks the legal basis to intervene in this matter”.

The European Commission”, read the Diario del Puerto, “reiterated that there is no evidence to suggest that both national and European environmental legislation has been violated in the North Terminal project in the Port of Valencia”.
