The PAV expresses its solidarity with this historic festival which has been suspended this year due to the health crisis in Covid-19

Valenciaport shows its commitment to an event that is over 150 years old

These days are very special for Pinedo. For more than 150 years the beach area of the Creu de la Conca has been welcoming riders with their horses to challenge each other in the traditional Corregudes de Joies, a historic spectacle that this year has been suspended due to the health crisis caused by the Covid-19. The Port Authority of Valencia, together with the companies of the port community that support these historic races, want to show their solidarity with the organizers of the event and reiterate their commitment to the Corregudes de Joies so that next year the hundreds of people who come to the beach of Pinedo will again vibrate with these horse races that have been held since the mid-nineteenth century.

According to the tradition, in Les Corregudes de Joies, the rider has to ride without a saddle, as it has been done since the beginning by the farmers and the farmers of the area, who were the ones who promoted these races in the frame of their popular celebrations. The name of Corregudes de Joies comes from the prize given to the winners, large silk scarves that are usually hung over the laurel wreaths during the days of the race. One of the scarves will be to adorn the neck of the winning horse and another for the rider who stands on the victory.

Images of great beauty

The images of the horsemen and horsewomen on their horses, the complicity between them, the plasticity or the emotion of the audience, the sand and the water of Pinedo, and the background of the cranes of the Port as privileged spectators of this show, are considered of great beauty by the fans of photography who year after year attend this event.

This is a 700-meter race in which the riders compete for the precious jewel tied to the neck, that is, a silk scarf of different colours on a laurel wreath that was formerly given to the woman loved at the end of the race, a tradition that is still practised in Pinedo.

The Corregudes de Joies date back to the 18th century and were originally held in the orchard to the rhythm of tabalet and dolçaina. Pinedo is the only Valencian town that has maintained this tradition in the framework of its Festa Grossa.
