The COIICV has highlighted the crucial role of the ports and airports of Alicante, Castellón and Valencia in guaranteeing mobility and supply to society at its worst moment in the fight against COVID-19.

Federico Torres, Head of Ecological Transition of the PAV thanked for this award which is a recognition of the work of the port and logistics community.

The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) has received the Luis Merelo i Mas award in the category of Infrastructures granted by the Official College of Industrial Engineers of the Valencia Region. The head of Ecological Transition, Federico Torres, expressed his gratitude for this award in recognition of the work of the port and logistics community during the COVID-19 pandemic, from the most elementary services to the most complex engineering, which made it possible for the port areas of Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia not to stop during the pandemic and to guarantee supplies to companies, institutions and individuals.

The PAV has highlighted the role of the entire logistics and port community, made up of thousands of companies and workers whose efforts and commitment have made it possible for port activity to function during the most complex moments of COVID-19. A task that has highlighted the essential service of port activity for companies and people’s lives. In fact, the Port of Valencia is the gateway for 40% of Spain’s export/import activity, playing a key role in allowing Spanish products to reach any corner of the world, and facilitating the supply of materials and products to the business fabric and people. This work involves all the professionals, companies and institutions that position Valenciaport as a strategic hub in the Mediterranean.

For the COIICV, infrastructures, as a nexus of interaction, have been another of the key tools in this pandemic that have also received recognition in this edition, highlighting the work of ports and airports of Alicante, Castellón and Valencia. The #COIICV has valued their crucial role in the development of the fight against the pandemic by firmly and against the clock structuring the complex organisational, logistical and functional strategies to guarantee mobility and supply to society at its worst moment in the fight against COVID-19.

Luis Merelo i Mas Awards

Since 2016, the Official College of Industrial Engineers has been organising the Luis Merelo i Mas Awards, prizes in honour of the youngest Industrial Engineer in Spain who was the 58th member of the COIICV in Valencia, from its beginnings in 1951. His projects include the aerial metro of Valencia, the construction of a seaport in L’Azud de L’or, he made the river Túria navigable up to Monteolivete, and he buried the tracks of the Estación del Norte, converting the space into a cultural and sports area.

The Official College of Industrial Engineers of the Valencian Community, COIICV, is aware of the great work carried out by members and professionals who participate in the field of engineering and in the management and organisation of the development of industry and society in our Community, and its importance in promoting the quality and progress of a profession, Industrial Engineering. The creation of these awards aims to highlight and show support and recognition for initiatives that benefit industry, society and the profession, as well as society in general.
