Valencia, February 28th 2018. – The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) participates in the meeting of the Maritime and Ports Group of the Association of European Vehicles Logistics, ECG, which will be held tomorrow in Cuxhaven (Germany). This is the first meeting of this working group focused on the maritime traffic of new vehicles that is celebrated in this exercise and which has the presence, on the part of Spain, of the ports of Valencia and Barcelona. The ECG brings together more than 80 companies in the automotive logistics sector among shipping companies, operators, port authorities, equipment manufacturers and other associations.

The meeting, which will be attended by Fátima Zayed on behalf of the PAV, will approach the application of information technologies to the automotive logistics sector. Specifically, the attendees will analyze the possibilities of increasing respect for the environment through the promotion of the use of rail, a conveyance that not only guarantees safety in the logistics of the automobile transport, but is key to reducing CO2 in the transportation of this industry. Likewise, goods traceability will be examined to detect and mitigate possible failures in the logistics chain.

Automobile traffic

In recent years, automobiles have established themselves as one of the main traffic of Valenciaport, making the site a strategic port for the Spanish automotive industry. Currently, Valenciaport already has 1,000,000 m2 at the service of the automotive industry, of which 412,000 m2 are located in Valencia and 560,000 m2 in the port of Sagunto. Also, the PAV has almost 5 km of berthing line (1,845 m2 in Valencia and 2,800 m2 in Sagunto) for this industry that allow the arrival of large ro-ro cargo ships.

These infrastructures are completed by rail access to the port of Valencia, in addition to the agreement signed with ADIF for which the PAV will allocate 31 million €. for rail access to the Sagunto site; an agreement and investments that have already begun to appreciate with the recovery of Valencia-Zaragoza-Bilbao / Santander traffic through Teruel.

The three terminals located in Valencia and the five concession areas and terminals of Sagunto destined for the automotive industry, as well as the increase of the area destined to this activity, have allowed Valenciaport to climb positions quickly in the last two years and pass from being the fourteenth port in the world in vehicle traffic to the eighth it occupied at the end of last year. Vehicle traffic in the PAV was 794,954 vehicles in 2017, representing an increase of 2.5% compared to 2016.
