Valenciaport reinforces the link with the citizenship showing once again its interest in bringing culture not only to Valencians but to the whole country

València, April 6th, 2022.- The Port Authority of Valencia has inaugurated the exhibition “Quino, Mafalda and much more” in Alcalá de Henares, bringing the acid and vindictive humour of the Argentinian creator to the university city and crossing the Valencian borders for the first time. The Oidor Chapel will host until the 8th of May the more than 200 cartoons that highlight Quino’s career and visitors will be able to access it free of charge and enjoy Mafalda and her friends Felipe, Manolito, Susanita, Miguelito and Libertad. Once again, Valenciaport is consolidating its position as an institution that is committed to bringing culture closer to society both in Valencia and in the rest of the country.

The opening ceremony was attended by María Aranguren, Councillor for Culture of Alcalá de Henares; José Vicente Saz, Rector of the University of Alcalá; Juan Garcia, Executive Secretary of the Quevedo Institute of Humour of the University of Alcalá de Henares; Vicent Palací, Head of Communication and External Relations of the Port Authority of Valencia (APV); Ester Medán, curator of the exhibition, and Carolina Lavado, one of Quino’s nieces.

For the Mayor of Culture of Alcalá de Henares, “we are proud to host in this city an exhibition of the work of one of the most outstanding international cartoonists, who knew how to transmit to us through the innocent gaze of a group of children everything that many adults did not dare to express”. The Rector of the University stressed that “Mafalda is part of our lives, Quino’s wit is still relevant to current issues of our daily lives”. José Vicente Saz thanked the APV for this initiative, “a collaboration that we will maintain for many years to come”.

For his part, the head of Communication and External Relations of Valenciaport indicated that “the Port of Valencia has proved to be a world reference in goods traffic and connectivity, but it is also a leader in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and promotion of culture. The success of the exhibitions held in Valencia is in addition to other CSR actions such as attention to the maritime districts through institutions such as Aportem, citizen participation and environmental commitment”. Along these lines, the APV has offered to collaborate with the University of Alcalá de Henares to take these actions to other countries with which it has commercial relations.

“Quino, Mafalda and much more”, took the Clock Building of the Port of Valencia by storm, where it received more than 25,000 visitors and was responsible for bidding farewell to the year and welcoming 2022. The curator of the exhibition, Ester Medan, emphasised that “the exhibition looks at Quino’s career through his extensive work. In fact, it has been very difficult to select 200 cartoons by such a prolific author”.

Quino’s humour

The exhibition takes us on a three-stop journey through the professional career of Joaquín Salvador Lavador Tejón, better known as Quino. The first of these, “Quino’s humour”, explains the peculiarities of the artist and the essence of his creations. The second, “Mafalda”, focuses on his most famous work, the vindictive girl ahead of her time, who has been a global milestone and has achieved important advances in equality and human rights, while the third, “Homage to Quino”, shows the awards and recognitions that Quino has received for his work.

The exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 19:00 and on Sundays from 11:00 to 14:00. The exhibition is organised by the Port Authority of Valencia (APV) in collaboration with the Quevedo Institute of the Arts of Humour.

PAV ships from Valencia to multiple destinations

Valenciaport is committed to culture as a sign of identity and commitment to citizens, bringing exhibitions of great references in humour not only to Valencians but to all Spaniards.

Proof of this is the transfer of the Mafalda exhibition to Alcalá de Henares or the Peridis exhibition to Sagunto. A fact that society is grateful for, as the number of visitors to the exhibitions corroborates the interest and is a symbol of the link that has been established between the port and the citizens.
