  • According to Joan Calabuig, president of the PAV, “investing in this initiative is a strategic decision. Illescas is in an enclave of great interest for the Port of Valencia both for the connection with the municipality itself and with the whole of Castilla-La Mancha, the south of Madrid and Portugal”

València, 4th July de 2023.- José Manuel Tofiño, Mayor of Illescas Town Council, and Joan Calabuig, President of the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV), have signed this morning a Protocol for the joint promotion of the future rail freight terminal of the Iberum multimodal central platform. The initiative includes the intention of the parties to form a majority public company (50% between the City Council and the Port Authority of Valencia) for the future development and viable operation of this project. It also provides for the future investment of a private operator (with a maximum of 40%, shippers and companies in the environmental area), which will provide and retain cargo.

The signing of the Protocol was also attended by Francisco Rodríguez, Councillor for Town Planning; Miguel Ángel González and Susana Palacios, promoter of Plataforma Central Iberum and Technical Director, respectively, and Francesc Sánchez, General Manager of Valenciaport, accompanied by the manager of VPI, Fátima Zayed and the deputy director, Néstor Martínez.

For Joan Calabuig, “investing in this initiative is a strategic decision. Illescas is in an enclave of great interest for the Port of Valencia both for the connection with the municipality itself and with the whole of Castilla-La Mancha, the south of Madrid and Portugal. What is more, it is a project within the guidelines of decarbonisation and promotion of the railway, which are always present in the investment decisions of the Port Authority of València”.

For his part, José Manuel Tofiño, Mayor of Illescas, pointed out that “the multimodal station that the City Council and the Port of València are promoting is starting with the support of the public sector and its success will be guaranteed by the collaboration of private companies”.

Characteristics of the future multimodal platform

This proposal consists of the construction of a multimodal station which will serve the import/export of a logistics area of more than 5 million square metres. XXL logistics warehouses of more than 50,000 square metres are already in operation there.

It is planned that VPI Logística, as a company of the APV Group, will participate in the construction of the intermodal and in the management of the operation, through a public tender. The infrastructure includes two 735-metre loading and unloading lanes, an 807-metre reception/dispatch lane, and parking for heavy vehicles. The investment required for the construction of this terminal is 15,152,856 euros.

According to the consultancy firm that has carried out the feasibility study for this project, the potential intermodal transport demand of the future platform is 18,500 TEU’s in the first year of operation estimated for 2025 and an “initial forecast of 6 trains per week that after the ramp-up of the first three years of operation, the terminal will have a frequency of 21 trains per week in 2028, increasing to 33 trains per week in 2050”.
