The companies that form part of this initiative promoted by the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) have achieved their objectives in areas such as the reduction of fuel and water consumption and the use of alternative energies

València, April 22th, 2022.- Valenciaport has a clear objective: 2030 zero emissions. This is the commitment that the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) has set itself, a plan on which it has already been working for some time and which will allow it to be two decades ahead of the objectives of decarbonisation and reduction of greenhouse gases that Spain, Europe and international organisations have projected for 2050. A common objective in which the entire port community is involved, and which is reflected in concrete and measurable projects.

One of these initiatives is Ecoport II, promoted by the APV, to improve the environmental state of the ports of Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia. Companies operating in the port area are taking part in this project. The firms have taken stock of the environmental milestones achieved during 2021, objectives that have been formulated voluntarily by the participating companies and which are additional to the Environmental Management System of each one of them.

Specifically, the companies that make up the Ecoport II Environmental Committee formulated a total of eight environmental objectives that could be selected by the companies that wished to do so. In 2021, these objectives were:

  • Increase in the percentage of waste recovered. The objective was selected by 13 companies, of which 10 obtained an increase in their recovered waste with an average of 50.25%, equivalent to 1,092,270 kg.
  • Decrease in water consumption 1%. 10 companies participated, of which 4 managed to reduce their water consumption by approximately 12%, equivalent to 17,941 litres.
  • Reduction of fuel consumption by 1%. 13 companies registered in this line, achieving savings well above the 1% target, estimated at 9% as an average value for each company, which represents a total of 10,348,102 litres.
  • Decrease in electricity consumption 1%. This was selected by 17 companies, of which 8 obtained a decrease in their electricity consumption with an average for each company of 7.1%, equivalent to 33,865 Kw/h.
  • Use of alternative energy sources. A total of 7 companies opted for this option, of which 5 have met the expected target. The actions carried out by the companies include, among others, the use of Compressed Natural Gas and the use of solar energy through photovoltaic plants.
  • Calculation of the carbon footprint. Seventeen companies participated in this line, and 88% achieved this objective.
  • Participation in environmental initiatives. This initiative was chosen by 19 companies, and all have actively collaborated.
  • Identification of circular economy. 3 companies participated and achieved this objective. Actions such as: attendance at webinars and events related to the circular economy; use of wastewater; recycling of plastics that can be reused; recycling of paper generated and purchase of recycled paper; purchase and use of refillable glass bottles and implementation of water fountains.

During 2021, in terms of training and awareness-raising provided in the certified companies, either within the framework of Ecoport II or carried out internally by each company, a total of 3,800 hours/people have been employed, out of the total number of workers that make up all the companies, and 40% of them have completed the training courses.
