They have held a five-minute silent stop in solidarity with the people of Ukraine

It joins the initiative promoted by CCOO and UGT

València, March 9th, 2022.- The workers of the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) have held a five-minute silent demonstration in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and have demanded a ceasefire and the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops in the country. The rally was held between 12.00 and 12.05 at the PAV facilities.

Valenciaport staff joined the initiative promoted by CCOO and UGT and supported the communiqué issued by both union representatives:

CCOO and UGT have demanded that all necessary measures be taken so that the war action stops urgently and the Russian troops withdraw from Ukrainian territory, which they have occupied in violation of international law, and peace is restored.

In the humanitarian field, the Spanish Government and the European Union must be up to the task that this situation requires, and mark a clear difference with other occasions when they have not been. We are obliged to provide all necessary support to war-affected people in the region or wherever they move, ensuring the establishment and security of humanitarian corridors and developing reception and relocation plans within the EU.

Legal opportunities should also be made available. Today, more than ever, it is imperative to keep in mind the founding principles of Europe: peace, democracy and solidarity. We reaffirm our commitment to disarmament worldwide and to the signing of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons at the global level, guarantor of peace and freedom worldwide.

UGT and CCOO also stand in solidarity with the Russian people who are demanding an end to the war and who are bravely demonstrating against the actions of their government and who are being repressed, arrested and imprisoned for exercising such fundamental rights as freedom of opinion or demonstration, as well as with the working class who will also pay a high price for the war bet of their government.

CCOO and UGT draw attention to the shameful and irresponsible game of disruptive and authoritarian political forces that have emerged all over the world and significantly in Europe, and that have gone from flirting with Putin, to shouting their anti-European messages louder and beating the drums of war with the national flag. The national populism displayed by the far right is a risk to democracy and its exacerbation is yet another consequence of the war. We, the Spanish working class, as well as the world working class, recognise ourselves only in a world without war and in achieving a just and lasting peace, also through social justice.
