The Gandia-Ibiza line reached 27,187 passengers at the end of August.

Gandia, September the 21st 2017. – The port of Gandia has handled a total of 244,257 tonnes up to the month of August, representing a decrease of 4.77% over the same period of the previous year. Foreign trade handled through this port area declined 5.42% due to the behavior of exports that fell by 18.82%. In contrast, exports from the port of Gandia grew by 20.92%.

Conventional general cargo decreases by 3.59% to a total of 240,930 tonnes. This heading includes goods such as paper and pulp, with a movement of 109,000 tonnes and a decrease of 10.91%; wood and cork, with a movement of 60,000 tonnes and an increase of 22.43%; and chemicals, with 58,000 tonnes and an increase of 1.91%.

Regarding passenger traffic, data from the statistical bulletin of the Port Authority of Valencia show that the regular line between Gandia and Ibiza started this year has reached 27,187 passengers since its entry into operation.

Valenciaport handled last August 452,642 TEU, a figure that represents the best record of the month of August in all of its history. The increase was mainly due to the strength with which the number of full containers has grown; both import, export and transit. That is how, last August, a total of 360,357 TEUs (containers of 20 feet) passed through the terminals of Valenciaport, a figure that represents an increase of 17.50% compared to the 306,692 TEUs processed during the month of August last year . Of the total containers that passed through Valenciaport, 81,170 were of cargo (of export) up 18.13%; 66,082 were unloading (import), up 18.14% and 213.103 were transit (which were unloaded at the terminals of Valenciaport to be sent to other destinations), an increase of 17.06% . In contrast, the empty containers managed were 92,285, 15.91% lower than the same month of the previous year.

The sum of full and empty containers reached 452,642 units; which compared to 416,436 last year, allows a rise in last August of 8.69%. This is the best month of August in the history of the port of Valencia and represents a reflection of the dynamism of companies in a port hinterland increasingly competitive and open to international markets.

Adding the results of the month of August to the first seven monthly payments of the current year, cumulative aggregate data indicates that the cumulative traffic of the year consolidates the path of growth initiated last July, with a total of 3,200,935 TEU and an increase of 1.44%. Foreign trade of full containers is the main responsible for this good registration with an increase of 6.79% in this period. Specifically, exports advanced 7.91% while imports increased by 5.28%. The transit of containers also maintains the positive tone with an advance of 4.37%. On the contrary, empty containers evolve negatively when descending 18.46% until the month of August.

With regard to total traffic, until August Valenciaport has handled 49,071,233 tonnes, a figure that represents a growth of 2.85%. Import-export of containerised general cargo increased by 7.08% to a total of 15,399,038 tonnes. Specifically, exports increased by 7.12% to 9.84 million tonnes due to the good performance of countries such as the United States (+ 14.44%) and Morocco (+ 3.54%). Imports rose by 7.02% to 5.56 million tonnes, driven by results from countries such as China (+ 15.33%), France (+ 29.52%), the United States (+ 11.50%) and Turkey (+ 33.13%). Global transit in this period amounts to 5.67%.

Containerised general cargo rose by 5.03%, to a total of 37,628,057 tonnes. This growth is mainly due to the behavior of goods such as construction materials, which rose by 3.34% to 3.87 million tonnes; rest of goods that, with 1.46 million tonnes, registered an increase of 2.85%; and chemicals with 1.27 million tonnes, grew a 2.86%.

Likewise, conventional general cargo is maintained in positive records, with a rise of 2.70% and a total of 7,536,943 tonnes handled. In this section stands out goods such as steel products, with a total of 1.49 million tonnes and a growth of 25.34%; and automobiles and pieces, with 997,000 tonnes and a decrease of 4.13%. By units, the ports of Valencia and Sagunto have handled 514,577 automobiles, a 0.30% more than during the same period of the previous year. By contrast, ro-ro traffic decreased by 1.63% to a total of 6,056,801 tonnes.

Based on data from the statistical bulletin of the Port Authority of Valencia, bulk, both liquid and solid, experienced a decrease in the accumulated up to the eighth month of the year. In particular, liquid bulk decreased by 5.33% to a total of 2,295,650 tonnes. This decrease is mainly due to the evolution of natural gas traffic, which fell by 16.14% to 1.17 million tonnes; and diesel, with 284,000 tonnes, down 6.83%.

Solid bulk, with a total of 1,414,705 tonnes, fell 21.36%. This heading includes goods movements such as cereals and flour, with a traffic of 613,000 tonnes and a decrease of 5.54%; natural and artificial fertilizers, with a traffic of 354,000 tonnes and an increase of 31.43%; and cement and clinker, with traffic of 182,000 tonnes and a descent of  51.39%.

August statistical bulletin notes that, until the eighth month of the year, the ports of Valencia and Gandia were the origin / destination of 678,190 passengers, 21.16% more than in the same period of the previous year. In particular, regular line services were used by 447,830 people, a figure that represents an advance of 30.82%. Meanwhile, 230,360 people arrived in Valencia aboard one of the 105 tourist cruise stopover received until August, 5.95% higher than the traffic registered in 2016.

Traffic by countries and geographical areas

 The five countries shipping the largest volume of goods handled through Valenciaport until August were:Spain, with 5.81 million tonnes and a decrease of 0.69%; China, with 4.85 million tonnes and an increase of 7.19%; United States, with 3.39 million tonnes and an increase of 16.76%; Italy, with 3.02 million tonnes and a decline of 7.16%; and Algeria, with 2.81 million tonnes and a decrease of 27.32%. By geographical areas the area of the Mediterranean and Black Sea stands out with traffic of 12.18 million tonnes and a decrease of 8.04%; and the Far East, with 7.24 million tonnes and an increase of 11.50%.
