Conventional general cargo registered an increase of 26.21%, driven by the good performance of steel products, which increased by 26.48%.

Sagunto, December the 18th 2017. – Car traffic in the port of Sagunto continues to accelerate its growth. The data of the statistical bulletin of the Port Authority of Valencia verify that, until the month of November, the enclave has manipulated 240,413 vehicles, 42.37% more than during the same period of the previous year. On the other hand, total traffic continues in descending records with an accumulated decrease of 9.84% and a movement of 5,328,457 tonnes. This decrease is mainly due to the behavior of bulk and container traffic. 

On the positive side, conventional general cargo advanced a 26.21%, to a total traffic of 2,653,956 tonnes. In this section, fundamentally, steel products traffics stands out with 2.07 million tonnes, up 26,48%; and automobiles and pieces that, with 424,000 tonnes, increased by 38.70%. Containerized general cargo for its part drops by 10.65% with a movement of 451,621 tonnes. If we break down this data by units, the port of Sagunto has channeled a total of 48,909 TEU, 11.14% down.

With regard to liquid bulk, in the accumulated until the penultimate month of the year, these goods decreased by 28.80%. In total, until November, Sagunto has handled 1,563,006 tonnes. This decline is due to the behavior of natural gas which, with 1.32 million tonnes, decreases by 32.49%. In contrast, chemicals rose 9.40% to 171,000 tonnes.

Likewise, solid bulks decreased by 40.79% to 593,993 tonnes. This heading includes goods such as natural and artificial fertilizers, with a movement of 354,000 tonnes and an advance of 32.26%; and cement and clinker, with a movement of 78,000 tonnes and a decrease of 72.45%.

Port Authority of Valencia data

Valenciaport closed the month of November with 4,452,679 TEU (unit of measure equivalent to a container of twenty feet), 2.15% more than during the same period of the previous year. This figure is to accelerate the growth of container traffic in the site and is mainly due to the performance of full containers, an indicator that shows the value of Valenciaport for its hinterland. In this sense, the foreign trade of full containers has grown by 5.66% until November. Specifically, exports advanced 6.72%, to 830,899 TEU; while imports increase by 6.25% to a total of 608,025 TEU. The transit of full containers also maintains the path of growth, with 2,032,388 TEU, up 5.06%. On the other hand, empty containers fall by 8.60%.

As regards total traffic, in the period between January and November, Valenciaport handled 67,700,073 tonnes, 3.28% more than in the previous year. Foreign trade of general cargo has experienced an increase of 8.53%, to a total of 21,399,417 tonnes. Specifically, exports grew by 8.27% to a total of 13,635,204 tonnes due to the good performance of countries such as Italy (+ 12.69%), the United States (+ 18.39%) and Morocco (+3, 89%). On the other hand, imports increased an 8.98%, to a total of 7,764,213 tonnes. It is worth noting the good records of countries such as China (+ 14.13%), France (+ 13.02%), the United States (+ 8.66%) and Turkey (+ 30.95%).  Global Transit increased by 4.88%.

Closing Forecasts

Valenciaport expects to close the year 2017 reaching 73.5 million tonnes, with a total growth of 3.6%. As the president of the Port Authority of Valencia, Aurelio Martínez, said after the Board of Directors of the institution held last Friday that, container traffic will close 2017 with a movement of 4.8 million TEU, a figure that will mean an increase of 2.15%. These figures are possible thanks to the good performance of foreign trade in full containers, which is expected to grow 5.65%, to 3.8 million TEU. Specifically, the PAV forecasts estimate that exports will rise at a rate of 6.82% while imports will advance 6.28%.

With regard to passenger traffic, Valenciaport plans to close the year with 1,064,000 people, which will mean overcoming the historic record of the site. On the other hand, vehicle traffic will increase by 2.95%, approaching 800,000 units.

Traffic by goods

By breaking down the data of the statistical bulletin of the Port Authority of Valencia, the containerized general cargo grows a 4.17%. In total, until November, 51,585,740 tonnes have been handled into the ports managed by the PAV. This increase is mainly due to the good performance of goods such as construction materials which, with 5.19 million tonnes, grew a 5.87%; rest of goods that, with 2.01 million tonnes, advances 3.50%; and chemicals that, with 1.75 million tonnes, registered an increase of 4.94%.

Likewise, conventional general cargo maintains the positive trend with 10,728,362 tonnes and an increase of 8.01%. The good performance of steel products, with a movement of 2.1 million tonnes and an advance of 24.86%, supports this data. Likewise, it is worth highlighting in this section the results of goods such as automobiles and pieces, which, with 1.49 million tonnes, increased by 4.32%. If we analyze these data by units, the ports of Valencia and Sagunto have channeled 735,363 vehicles in the accumulated between January and November, 2.97% more than in the same period of the previous year. In this same line, ro-ro traffic experienced an increase of 4.03% to a total of 8,587,512 tonnes.

On the contrary, solid and liquid bulk falls back in the accumulated until the month of November. Liquid bulk decreased by 9.94% to 3,027,191 tonnes. This decrease is driven by the evolution of traffic such as natural gas which, with 1.32 million tonnes, went down by 32.49%; and diesel that, with 350,000 tonnes, decreased by 18.86%.

For its part, solid bulk decreased by 9.63% to 2,077,849 tonnes. This heading includes the traffic of goods such as cereals and flours, with a movement of 976,000 tonnes and an increase of 20.45%; natural and artificial fertilizers, with a traffic of 526,000 tonnes and an increase of 19.26%; and cement and clinker, with a movement of 214,000 tonnes and a decline of 52.51%.

Passenger data

In response to the data from the statistical bulletin of the Port Authority of Valencia, at the end of November, Valenciaport has already exceeded the figure of one million passengers. Specifically, until November, the ports of Valencia and Gandia have used 1,001,080 people in their maritime movements, a figure that represents a growth of 16.86% compared to the same period of 2016. In particular, the services of regular line were used by 601,011 passengers, a 30.27%. On the other hand, 400,069 people visited Valencia on board one of the 195 tourist cruise scales received until November.

Traffic by countries and geographical areas

The five countries shipping the largest volume of goods channeled through Valenciaport until November were: Spain, with 8.01 million tonnes and an advance of 1.23%; China, with 6.47 million tonnes and an increase of 3.18%; United States, with 4.67 million tonnes and an increase of 16.85%, Italy, with 4.40 million tonnes and a decrease of 0.62%; and Algeria, with 3.68 million tonnes and a decrease of 29.02%. By geographical areas, the Mediterranean and Black Sea areas stand out, with 17.1 million tonnes and a decrease of 3.51%; and that of the Far East, with 9.64 million tonnes and an increase of 6.51%.
