Benicarló, 10 August 2023.- The Museu de la Ciutat de Benicarló ‘mucBe’ hosts from today the exhibition “Quino. Mafalda y mucho más”, an exhibition that traces the career of the cartoonist Joaquín Salvador Lavador Tejón, Quino, father of Mafalda and of an acid and biting humour that often delves into the misery and absurdity of the human condition.
“Quino. Mafalda y mucho más” is organised by the Port Authority of Valencia (APV) in collaboration with the Quevedo Institute of Humour of the University of Alcalá de Henares and Benicarló Town Council. In this way, the APV reinforces its commitment to the city and contributes to actions that promote its culture and develop its critical spirit.
The exhibition takes a look at Quino’s career through more than 200 cartoons, advertising posters, audiovisuals and publications in several languages that will give an account of the international projection of the Argentinean artist’s work. Together with Mafalda and her friends, visitors to this free exhibition will be able to enjoy one of the world icons of graphic humour and his non-conformist and restless vision of society in the cartoons produced between 1964 and 1973.
This is a unique opportunity to review current issues such as the environment, equality, injustice, solidarity and politics in a humorous tone, thanks to Mafalda and her friends Felipe, Manolito, Susanita, Libertad and Guille. An unforgettable exhibition that has already toured Valencia, Gandia and Alcalá de Henares, Sagunto and now stops in Benicarló.
The mayor of Benicarló, Juan Manuel Cerdá, together with Maite Pellicer, councillor for Culture of Benicarló, Ester Medan, curator of the exhibition, Juan García, director of the Quevedo Institute of Humour of the University of Alcalá de Henares, José Martín Robles, from the communication department and external relations of Valenciaport, and Diego Lavado, Quino’s nephew, have inaugurated the exhibition, which can be visited from tomorrow and will remain open until 15 October, a free exhibition that can be visited from Tuesday to Friday between 9. 00 to 14.00 and from 17.00 to 20.00 hours; Saturdays from 10.00 to 13.00 hours and from 17.00 to 20.00 hours; and Sundays from 10.30 to 13.30 hours.
Mafalda and much more
The exhibition includes more than 200 cartoons and documents that retrace the life and professional career of this world leader in graphic humour, creator of a style of acid and biting humour that deals with issues such as inequality, the environment, social justice and the political and economic world. His cartoons have transcended time and are still very much up to date and, as well as making visitors laugh, they make us reflect and encourage our critical thinking.
The exhibition is divided into different sections, such as Quino’s Humour, which explains his technique and the meaning of his works. In the section dedicated to Mafalda, whose comic strips were published between 1964 and 1973, visitors can learn about the universe surrounding this world comic icon through a selection of cartoons and documents. In the Homage to Quino section, the awards received by the Argentinian cartoonist and the recognition of society are on display. The exhibition dedicated to Mafalda and her friends could already be seen in the Clock Building of the Port of Valencia where it was visited by more than 25,000 people, in the facilities of the University of Alcalá de Henares where 16,000 visitors came to see it or in the Casa de Cultura Marqués de González de Quirós in Gandia which received 12,000 lovers of the iconic character created by Quino or in Sagunto where thousands more visitors came to see it.
