The free exhibition includes 300 labels of Valencian products such as oranges, liqueurs and other Valencian products
València, September 27th, 2022.- The Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) is to organise a series of educational workshops aimed at children to learn the printing techniques used by Valencian creators as part of the exhibition “València Porta al Disseny. Exportació dels nostres productes als segles XIX i XX”, which will take place in the Clock Building of the Port of Valencia from 3 October to 6 November.
These workshops will introduce participants to the design and production of the silk paper used to wrap citrus fruits in order to create their own fruit wrappings. This practice is associated with export, when the wrapping was used to protect the fruit during transport and to identify it with the company’s brand. From the beginning of the 20th century, with the advance of printing systems, design began to be considered on silk paper, giving each fruit a more attractive, eye-catching and sophisticated value.
In the workshop that Valenciaport has prepared for the exhibition, participants will use the stencil technique to print on silk paper. Using different stencils inspired by the labels in the exhibition – with motifs associated with nature, the climate, healthy living or exotic places – the participants in this activity will be able to make their own designs, using acrylic paint, which will be applied to the open areas of the stencil with rollers on the tissue paper. After drying, the silk-screen printing technique will be used to frame the composition with an image that will give unity to all the works produced, which the children attending the workshop will be able to take away with them.
The workshops will be free of charge and there will be only one session per day. Specifically, they will be held on 6, 13, 16, 18, 22, 22, 25, 30 October and 5 November 2022, between 11.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. in the Clock Building. This activity is aimed at children from 6 years of age and those interested can register by emailing [email protected].
More than 300 labels to ‘sell’ Valencian products
València, Porta del Disseny. Exportació dels nostres productes als segles XIX i XX” will exhibit the labelling and posters of Valencian food products from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It will feature 300 labels and posters of oranges, wines, liqueurs and other Valencian products, as well as packaging, bottles and objects from the period.
With this exhibition, the Port Authority of Valencia (PAV) is joining in with the celebration of the city of Valencia as World Design Capital 2022, making known the importance that the Port had and has in the export of Valencian products and the designs that accompany them.
The massive sale of Valencian agri-food products throughout Europe between the end of the 19th century and the 1960s forced hundreds of producers to create a brand image with which to identify their products. These labels and posters were an experimental field of design for Valencian artists and lithographers. An exhibition that reflects the creativity of the period and at the same time highlights the entrepreneurial work of Valencian society and businessmen in taking their products through the Port of Valencia to all corners of the world.
In addition, the exhibition, a reinforcement of the city-port relationship, is accompanied by an educational area for children, as is usual in the activities carried out by Valenciaport in the Clock Building. In recent years, the Port of Valencia has hosted numerous exhibitions such as “Quino. Mafalda y mucho más”, “Imágenes imborrables”, “Plànols, Maquetes i Mestres d’Aixà del Port de València” or “La Dàrsena Històrica del Port de València: Progrés i Modernitat” or “Això és TEU – 5.000.000”, bringing culture closer to the citizens of Valencia.
