Most container traffic is handled in the Port of Valencia, a highlight being the spectacular growth in TEU volumes in foreign trade and transit traffic.

In Spain, the three leading container ports are: Algeciras, Valencia and Barcelona. Most of the traffic handled in Algeciras is transit cargo and only a small amount comes from/goes to its own area of influence while traffic figures in Barcelona are lower than in Valencia.

The Port of Valencia serves as a channel for traffic from all sectors of the economy and for all kinds of cargo, particularly construction materials, agricultural products, livestock and food, energy, chemicals, the automotive industry, wood and furniture, and textiles.

Traffic through the Port of Sagunto is mainly steel products but there is also a high percentage of fertilisers, construction materials, wood and perishable goods. The Port of Gandía caters mainly for conventional general cargo specialising in cargo like: paper reels and pulp, wood imports and agricultural products from the area.
