ECOPORTS

Project financed by the European Union through its V Framework Programme, for harmonising environmental management in European ports and exchanging experiences and best practices in environmental issues.

The Port Authority of Valencia leads a work group whose aim is to implement EMAS (Environmental Management Systems), defined at the time in the ECOPORT project, in other ports including:

-      Port of Leghoprn

-      Port of Marseille

-      Port of Tenerife

-      ABP (Association of British Ports)

-      Port of Civitavecchia

-      Rinfuse Terminal in the Port of Genoa

With the information provided by the Port Authority together with comments and recommendations from the pilot ports where the systems are being implemented, a European guide on EMAS implementation in ports is intended to be drawn up.

EUROPHAR

The Port Authority of Valencia forms part of the European Economic Interest Group for Port environment management EUROPHAR, in which the Port Authorities of Genoa and Marseilles also participate along with research centres specialising in port environment.

The group has established itself as the “European player for environmental management in ports” and its major objectives are:

Europhar

-          To protect the natural port environment

-          To ensure worker and job safety

-          Training and raising the awareness of port personnel and society in general by taking parting different European projects among which the ECOPORTS project is a highlight.

“HADA” PROJECT

The Port Authority of Valencia, together with other Spanish ports, collaborates in the HADA Project (Computer Tools for Environmental Diagnosis), a project funded by the EU through its LIFE Programme, which will enable the design and development of a system to monitor atmospheric and acoustic pollution in port environments and linked to a Decision Making System.

Expected results of the project are the following:

-          The installation of in real time Monitoring Systems for both PM10 particles and SO2, Nox and CO particles in the participating ports.

-          A noise monitoring system that will serve as the basis for a Port Acoustics Network.

-          The design of a Control and Follow-Up Information System enabling noise pollution to be monitored in the participating ports.

-          The obtaining of a granulometric pattern for various discharging activities enabling emissions generated by specific port activities to be identified.

-          A comparative study of the effectiveness of major attenuating measures for atmospheric emissions produced by port activities.

INDAPORT PROJECT

The INDAPORT Project (Port Environmental Indicator System) benefits from funds provided by the Technological Research Development Programme (PROFIT) created by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology. It is directed by the Public Organisation of State Ports (EPPE) with the Port Authority of Valencia acting as a pilot port. This project is meant to:

-          Obtain an Environmental Indicator System that will provide the most precise information possible on the state and evolution  of the environment within the port precinct.

-          Establish a model that can be reproduced in other port environments.

The second phase of the Project, INDAPORT II, has now been ultimated. This phase has also benefited from the funds of the Technological Research Development Programme (PROFIT) of the Ministry of Science and Technology and aims at transferring the results of INDAPORT I to the rest of the Spanish port system.
